Wacken Open Air XXV

Wacken (Germany)

(Pentax K-5 with Sigma AF 70-200mm 2.8 EX DC APO HSM II)

Wacken 2014 is nearly history, but only nearly. Because there is still the final concert of the German medieval / folk rocker of Schandmaul to come. Numbers were dwindling as usual but the ones who stayed should be rewarded with a really great show.
With “In Deinem Namen” of the latest album “Unendlich” the last concert was opened atmospheric. Just like at Saltatio Mortis the day before also here unusual instruments were mainly sound defining like accordion that was played by singer Thomas Lindner, bagpipes, flute and shepherd’s pipe being played by Birgit Muggenthaler as well as wheel fiddle and violin which was wonderful recited by Anna Katharina Kränzlein. But not only the instruments also the lyrics with funny but also serious topics just at the encore “Bunt Nicht Braun” contributed very much to the good atmosphere in front of the stage. As it was a show of their tour within the scope of their current album the songs were of course mainly taken of it but also for older ones like the debut song “Teufelsweib” there was enough space.
A great gig which was optically very atmospheric with the videos shown on the big LED screen in the background. The band encouraged on and on the auditors to participate which they did willingly. So after four exhausting days this year’s Wacken is history again. Next year I will not join. But who knows, at some time we will meet again there. With this in mind: See you at Wacken, rain or shine!
