After the guys from Poem, Textures from the Netherlands had their chance to show what they were made of. They brought along their latest album, “Phenotype”, offering the audience a taste of its sound. With their progressive death metal, they cranked up the intensity compared to their predecessors. Vocalist Daniel de Jongh wasted no time, launching into a hard-hitting opener with “Drive” from their 2006 album, “Drawing Circles”.
Supporting him was Bart Hennephof, who, besides playing guitar, also provided backing vocals. The lineup was completed by Joe Tal on second guitar, Remko Tielemans on bass, Uri Dijk on keyboards, and Stef Broks on drums. By then, the crowd in front of the stage had grown, and their vocal support became more energetic. Temperatures rose, and with them, the atmosphere. I can’t recall all the songs played, but they delivered a solid cross-section of their previous albums before closing with “Lament of an Icarus” from their 2008 album, “Silhouettes”.
I had seen them live once before at Fortarock 2013, but on this particular evening, the spark just didn’t fully ignite for me. It was a solid performance overall, though I can’t quite pinpoint what was missing. Musically, however, Textures set the perfect stage for the headliner, Amorphis.
