M'era Luna

Hildesheim (Germany)

(Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II)

Sunday morning and the sun was shining brightly across the festival area. So, I took it easy as it was already announced that it would be getting very warm again and so the final day started with the folk-rock sounds of the Nuremberg band dArtagnan. They had only short time ago released their latest album “Herzblut” but instead started with “Freiheit & Tod” of the 2022 album “Felsenfest”. By that they were directly getting down to the nitty gritty. Very enthusiastic singer Ben Metzner changed again and again between singing and playing the bagpipe, jumped and swirled around like a dervish across the stage surrounded continuously by columns of fire.
There was really huge effort put into the show just like for a headliner but this already at 14:15, a time, where nobody would really expect such a thing. Just as little as the huge crowd that gathered in front of the stage and that despite the noonday heat. But that did not do any harm to the atmosphere, and all were bawling along, dancing along and followed the call of Metzner during the song “Westwind” to row with them. Only sitting down on the floor during that nobody wanted to do what I can fully understand at such a weather. Besides Metzner who played also tin whistle on some of the songs, his fellows Tim Bernard on guitar and Gustavo Strauss on violin took care of good moods supported by the live enhancement Matthias Böhm on drums, Sebastian Baumann on bass and Haiko Heinz on e-guitar. Especially two songs led to a significantly increase of volume: “Was Wollen Wir Trinken”, a song that nearly everybody knows and can sing along the simple lyrics and as closure the Avicii cover “Hey Brother” which was also having quite some merits in this folk-rock way of playing. At the end that then faded into the Brüder Outro which completed the short performance.
I am not sure what the thoughts of the M’era Luna promoters were when planning the running order but the crowd of people that gathered despite the heat in front of the stage plus the elaborate show in combination with a short 40 minutes set was somehow casting pearls before swine. I could only imagine that they did not want to have two folk rock bands playing back-to-back as Schandmaul was also on the running order of this afternoon. Be that as it may, the gig was a whole lot of fun in each case.
