The barely readable band logo already gave it away: things were about to get dark. Rotting Demise pulled out all the stops of classic black and death metal in the style of Behemoth and Cradle of Filth. With corpse paint, monk robes, inverted crosses, and a pentagram, the guys from the Ruhr area also offered plenty of visual flair. In their eight-year career, they had already released two full-length albums, showcasing an exciting mix ranging from slow, slightly doom-tinged tracks to faster, more aggressive songs.
Even the stage names were perfectly on brand: vocalist Silence certainly did not live up to his name, thankfully. With a blend of deep growls alternating with piercing screams reminiscent of Dani Filth, he formed the center of the performance. Around him, guitarists Mephisto and Asmodeus stalked the stage in their dark outfits, casting equally dark gazes into the crowd. The audience honored the ritual with raised arms and the first real headbanging of the day. The abyss-deep foundation of their sonic onslaught was laid by Belial behind the drum kit. Originally, Aran Angmar were supposed to play this slot, but they had to cancel on short notice. Since Necrotesque, who were scheduled later that evening, knew Rotting Demise personally, they recommended them for Grafschafter Metalfest. And why would anyone turn down such an offer? In hindsight, luckily so. I hadn’t expected too much, but I was very pleasantly surprised. For me, this was genuinely one of the stronger performances of the day, and many others seemed to feel the same. The line at the merch stand certainly wasn’t short.
