After facing the Russians already during qualification round and defeated by 2:3 so there was now the opportunity to have a revenge for that. So they directly tried to do this and the Germans quickly led by 1:0 and had until mid of the second period several and better opportunities to increase even to 2:0.
Instead of that it were the Russians to get the equaliser during second period. The game was now getting even more interesting with lots of opportunities on both sides. Everybody expected an overtime towards the end of the third period when the Russians not even two minutes in front of the end of the game socred the 2:1 winning goal and by that won the ticket to the final game.
