Blackfield Festival

Amphitheater Gelsenkirchen (Germany)

(Pentax K-5 with Tamron SP AF 17-50mm 2.8 XR Di II LD Asp IF and Sigma AF 50-150mm 2.8 EX DC APO HSM II)

With the Blackfield I went to a festival of the black scene which was something completely different to me. Unfortunately, it should take place for the last time ever this year due to several reasons (mainly financial ones) but that did not do any harm to the good atmosphere.
With slight delay one entered the amphitheater where right in time at 16:40 the first band Xiphea opened the day. With symphonic metal around mystic and fairytale themes it all started quite relaxed. Also, the negligible crowd started quite gentle which might also have had something to do with the burning sun. As winner of the Sonic Seducer junior band contest 2013 they were able to present their debut album “From The Uncharted Island” to a larger number of people. All that remembered somehow of Nightwish or Epica but was quite usable to raise the atmosphere a little bit.
The gig was very entertaining and overall quite well conveyed. Especially the contrast between singer Sabine Meusels soft voice in contrast to the hard riffs of her band colleagues remained in mind and I think that they have the potential to become more popular. All in all a good opening into the festival.
