Blackfield Festival

Amphitheater Gelsenkirchen (Germany)

(Pentax K-5 with Tamron SP AF 17-50mm 2.8 XR Di II LD Asp IF and Sigma AF 50-150mm 2.8 EX DC APO HSM II)

Just before the Swedish EBM duo Spetsnaz was able to enter the stage the festival moderator announced a severe weather warning and they were hoping that they would not have to evacuate the festival as Cologne already was under water. Luckily, the severe weather passed by Gelsenkirchen and the party could go on.
On stage it was quite oversee able as beside singer Pontus Stålberg and drummer Stefan Nilsson there was only the electric drum set and a small rack. You could not do it more minimalistic, quite suitable to the music of the two. In front of the stage it was slowly filling up and the crowd directly started dancing to the sounds of “Allegiance” of the album “Deadpan”. Again, very little time and to use it effectively the communication was again reduced to the absolute minimum. Whilst Stålberg still interacted with the audience and in-between also with huge gestures and very expressively accentuated the song “Darklink”, Nilsson was drumming stoically and without much movement in the background his set down.
Generally EBM is not my favorite style especially not the way Spetsnaz is playing it. But I have to say that on this festival I found it quite entertaining. Especially also due to the fact that the audience started dancing in different styles: classically one step forward – one step back across freestyle right up to Goa was everything represented and that really thrilled one.
