The shooting stars of the festival were definitely the guys from Unzucht from Hanover. Their music suited me better again, as the dark rock with great German lyrics was more in line with my taste. They have often been on tour as support for genre greats like Subway To Sally or Eisbrecher, and are currently on tour for their new album “Venus Luzifer”, making a stop in Gelsenkirchen.
Singer Daniel Schulz repeatedly sought direct contact with the audience from the beginning, waving a “bloodstained” white flag and urging everyone to sing and participate. It quickly became clear that he didn't need to do this for long as everyone joined in willingly. Although this was the tour for the current album “Venus Luzifer”, it unfortunately didn't feature much in the set list. Only “Seelenblind” and “Unendlich” were played from it, with the majority of the set consisting of songs from their debut “Todsünde 8”. You could clearly see how much fun the guys (in addition to Schulz, Daniel De Clercq on guitar, Toby Fuhrmann on drums, and Alex Blaschke on bass) were having during this performance. At some point, Schulz couldn't stay on the stage any longer and threw himself into the crowd for some crowd surfing. The songs varied well, and the coherent lyrics (even if they are sometimes a bit cheesy) were well-received. Slightly melancholic moments alternated with hard riffs, and the show itself was not neglected. Too soon, it was time for the band to conclude with “Engel Der Vernichtung”. The calls for an encore from the crowd didn't help, as several more bands were set to follow, and the schedule was tightly packed, leaving no time for an encore.
I really had fun with this band, and for me, they were one of the highlights of the day. You could literally feel how much they were passionate about these moments, and this spark immediately jumped over to the audience from the first moment. Unzucht is definitely a must-listen recommendation from my side, and if they play a concert nearby, you should definitely see them live.
