Graspop Metal Meeting

Dessel (Belgium)

(Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II)

I was very curious to see Charlotte Wessels. After her split from Delain, I had somewhat lost track of her, but in the Metal Dome - in front of a rather sparse crowd - she took the stage with her live musicians to present her current work "The Obsession".
Anyone who, like me, was hoping for symphonic metal was unfortunately completely disappointed. Apart from “Soft Revolution” from her debut "Tales From Six Feet Under" (2021), the set consisted solely of songs from the new album. They ranged from light hints of Delain to soft pop tracks that really made you wonder what such music was doing at a metal festival. Still, it was an all‑around solid performance, with a group right at the front repeatedly cheering loudly enough to put a smile on Charlotte’s face. She even managed an outfit change - a black‑and‑red cloak - within the short 45‑minute set.
But overall, it’s a bit like with Floor Jansen’s current solo album: these pop‑leaning tracks just don’t do it for me. A real shame, because I always thought she was fantastic during her time with Delain.

Setlist:

  • Chasing Sunsets
  • Dopamine
  • Ode To The West Wind
  • The Crying Room
  • Vigor And Valor
  • Praise
  • Soft Revolution
  • The Exorcism
