Heroes of the youth and other great bands
Over the Pentecost weekend, Metallica had announced that they would take over the city of Frankfurt and sell out Deutsche Bank Park twice. This was part of the 72 Seasons Tour and designed as a No‑Repeat Weekend, meaning not a single song would be played twice across the two shows (intro excluded).
Joining them on Friday night were Knocked Loose from the USA as the first opener. The guys are currently on a strong upward trajectory and have celebrated their first successes. Still, they struggled that day. For one, their sound was downright terrible, and the spark simply refused to jump to the unfortunately only half‑full stadium. Because of that, they couldn’t really show whether they could deliver live or not. After them, Gojira demonstrated that they operate in an entirely different league than Knocked Loose. Although their sound also left plenty of room for improvement, the atmosphere slowly began to rise. Still, there was noticeable potential for more, and I had already seen better performances from the band. The crowning finale of the evening was Metallica. Wow, the four gentlemen absolutely delivered! With an impressive performance on a 360° stage, they pulled the crowd in, and it turned into one big party from start to finish. Truly something worth experiencing.
After a day’s break, things continued on Sunday. First up were Avatar, who immediately proved that they had truly reached the next level and pulled the audience in from the very first moment. Fortunately, the sound was on par with Metallica’s on Friday night. By the time Pantera took the stage afterwards, the stadium was nearly completely full, and you could easily think the headliner was already playing. For an entire hour, the whole stadium sang along at the top of their lungs, and it was incredible what the guys delivered. The only thing that topped it was Metallica. It was unbelievable, but they managed to raise the bar even higher compared to Friday. The atmosphere was at boiling point the entire time. All in all, it was an outstanding weekend in which the headliner impressively showed twice what league they’re playing in. In total, nearly four hours of mega‑hits back‑to‑back without repeating a single song and the last two albums were represented by a mere three tracks. There are very few bands besides Metallica capable of pulling that off. So once again: hats off. That was world‑class!
